Copy Writing: First Person vs. Third Person

A common point of contention in copy writing is whether to write in first or third person.  What is the difference?

First person is writing as yourself; presenting your own perspective, ideas and experiences.  It is good for auto-biographies, emails and reports.  Third person is writing for and about someone / something else.  It is good for brochures, media releases and websites.

An example, highlighting the difference is as follows:

First person: I will be launching my new development this afternoon at 2pm.  Media are invited to interview me and get pictures of my new development.  Refreshments provided.

Third person: Clearwater Developments will be officially opened this afternoon by CEO Clive Smith at 2pm.  Media are invited to attend.  Interview and photo opportunities are available: refreshments will be served.

Which of these sound more professional?

A lot of business owners find it difficult to prepare content on their business, products and services.  They tend to write the information in first person.  Unfortunately, in most instances, this does not create a professional impression.

First person: I am based in Cairns and have 20 years experience as a plumber. I work seven days a week and bring my own tools.  I am committed to taking care of your plumbing needs.

Third person: Cairns Plumbing has 20 years professional experience, providing expert plumbing services to Cairns and Tropical North Queensland seven days a week.  Committed to fixing your drips and drops, Cairns Plumbing has the equipment and personnel to service your plumbing needs.
